This paper explores the critical need for reliable, affordable, and clean energy access in South Africa, drawing on firsthand experiences from the Katlehong township that underscore the profound impact of energy poverty on daily life and economic development. It highlights the environmental toll of traditional energy sources like coal stoves (“Imbawula”) and advocates for impactful interventions in the energy efficiency sector.

The paper analyses South Africa’s journey towards Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), noting significant progress in clean cooking access and electricity connections between 2000 and 2022. Moses Chichonye, an energy and electrical professional holding a valid Wireman’s License, specializes in ensuring safe and compliant electrical installations through meticulous inspections and the issuance of Certificates of Compliance (COCs). Being one of South Africa’s Registered EPC Professionals with SANEDI, his expertise extends to the critical domain of energy efficiency, encompassing the provision of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and the execution of comprehensive energy audits.
Moses is an EPC lead in CBRE Excellerate, responsible for heading the EPC department. As a dedicated candidate for Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) and an active member of the South African Energy Efficiency Confederation (SAEEC), South African Youth in Energy Sector (SAYES) and the South African National Energy Association (SANEA), His deeply committed to advancing sustainable energy practices and continuous professional development within the energy sector. His contributions include the publication of a technical paper in 2024 by SAEEC focused on Energy Performance Certificates, showcasing his analytical and technical capabilities.
